Statement by Secretary and Ambassador Ken Salazar About ‘BORDERLANDS: MY FIGHT FOR AN INCLUSIVE AMERICA’

Denver, ColoradoJune 22, 2026 – Borderlands: My Fight for an Inclusive America will be published in the United States on July 28, 2026 by BenBella Books of Dallas, Texas. The Spanish-language edition will be published in Mexico in September 2026 by Editorial Porrúa of Mexico City.

Borderlands is more than a memoir. It is a call for a new vision of America’s, Mexico’s and Canada’s future – one that recognizes the diversity of the United States as our greatest strength and embraces a stronger partnership across North America and the Americas to meet the economic, security, and humanitarian challenges of the 21st century.

At the heart of the book is the Borderlands Platform, a blueprint for creating a New American Alliance among the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The platform advances five core priorities designed to strengthen North America's prosperity, security, and global leadership:

1. SECURITY. The United States, Mexico, and Canada must establish an enforceable trilateral security alliance to confront organized crime, corruption, violence, and shared national security challenges.

2. TRADE. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement should be renewed and strengthened to ensure North America remains the world's most competitive economic region while protecting workers, businesses, and the environment.

3. MODERN AND SECURE BORDERS. The United States' borders with Mexico and Canada must be modernized to better combat crime, manage migration, facilitate lawful trade and travel, and enhance North America's economic competitiveness.

4. MIGRATION. Our nations must establish a durable legal framework for migration that supports labor needs, educational and cultural exchanges, family unity, asylum obligations, and respect for human rights.

5. DIVERSITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER. The United States, Mexico, and Canada should embrace the diversity of more than 520 million people as a defining strategic advantage. The New American Alliance recognizes that the strength of North America is rooted in its people – including the more than 50 million Mexican Americans and 20 million Latinos in the United States—and in stronger relationships throughout Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Borderlands offers a hopeful vision for the Americas’ future—one that rejects division in favor of opportunity, cooperation, and shared prosperity.

In the months ahead, Secretary Salazar will travel to key cities throughout the United States to discuss the ideas presented in Borderlands and engage Americans in a conversation about the future of our nation and our continent.

Beginning in September, following the publication of the Spanish-language edition, Secretary Salazar will also visit major cities throughout Mexico to continue that conversation.
